Capomo: Superfood and Coffee Alternative

capomoCapomo is an ancient Mayan superfood. Also called the “Mayan Nut”, it is a delicious nutrient-rich food that has been used in many Latin American communities for centuries. Capomo isn’t really a nut, but actually a seed that grows near the top of the hearty and drought-resistant capomo trees in many Latin American countries. The seeds are typically collected from the jungle floor once they have fallen from the towering capomo trees, which can grow up to 130 feet tall. The seeds can then be cooked for food, or roasted to make a cafe, a delicious alternative to coffee. When roasted, the flavor is similar to Mexican style coffee, rich and chocolaty with a hint of cinnamon. This decadent drink is delicious, naturally caffeine-free and loaded with nutrition.

capomo2Capomo is one of the richest plant sources of amino acids. Amino acids are the building blocks of protein that are responsible for repairing cells, stimulating antibodies to fight bacteria and viruses and to carry oxygen throughout the body. They are also mood elevators and assist our brains to work more efficiently.

Capomo’s special quality is that it provides significant levels of ALL the essential amino acids (“essential” means amino acids that can only be supplied via food). It is especially high in methionine, which helps the liver process fat and toxins, and tryptophan, an amino acid that is energizing and relaxing, as it lifts the mood. Capomo is high in fiber, calcium, potassium, folate, iron, zinc, protein and vitamins A, B, C and E.  The seeds when roasted for café or boiled for bread have the protein equivalent of eggs. Capomo can also be ground into flour and used for baking purposes. The flour is nutritionally superior to any other flour and is ideal for people with gluten sensitivity.

Capomo is also high in folic acid, making it a wonderful dietary addition for expecting mothers. Historically, it was also used by new mothers as a natural way to increase breast milk supply due to its galactagogue properties.

capomo3Where to buy Capomo if you live outside of Mexico? My friend Carly and her husband Hus fell in love with Capomo and its health benefits while living in Mexico. They learned from the locals all about the traditional Mayan ways of using Capomo as well as their struggle to preserve this vital crop. When Carly and Hus returned to the US, they were determined to bring the benefits of Capomo with them, but most importantly, they wanted to ensure that their Capomo is 100% wild harvested from the forest and comes from small women-owned cooperatives. They work directly with women who own and operate Capomo cooperatives in Mexico and Nicaragua. In fact, when buying from Between Friends Roasting Company, $1 from every Capomo purchase goes directly to fund workshops to empower these women to protect biodiversity through reforestation and sustainable harvesting. This is a product that you can truly feel good about buying. Carly and Hus are so sure you will love Capomo, they are giving a special discount to Nutrify For Life followers – simply use the promo code: NUTRIFY in the “coupon” section when checking out to receive $4 off your order!! It doesn’t get much better than that!
